Graduate studies at Geotop

Geotop is a research centre that brings together researchers in Earth Sciences, Biology, Chemistry and Oceanography (see the list of researchers under “Members”).  More than 100 graduate students are doing their M.Sc. and Ph.D. research projects under the supervision of these researchers. A very diverse number of graduate research subjects are pursued through observation, sampling, data analysis and modelling. The subjects addressed include climate and ocean changes, the evolution of the Earth at its surface and in its depths, the exchanges of chemical elements among its reservoirs: the hydrosphere, the lithosphere, the biosphere and the atmosphere (for a more complete list of themes, visit the web-pages of the researchers). The research is carried out in the field and in the laboratory. The students are also required to participate in national or international scientific conferences in order to present their research results, as well as interact with the Geotop community by attending seminars, student conferences and other proposed activities.

Here are the steps to follow in order to apply for graduate studies at the M.Sc. or Ph.D level at Geotop:

  1. The first step is to contact a researcher whose field corresponds with the student's interests.  An overview of the research interests of the Geotop members is presented on their  individual web pages. If needed, you can contact Sandrine Solignac, the Geotop coordinator, for advice.
  2. The candidate must apply for admission to one of the graduate study programmes available, depending on the discipline and the university where the prospective supervisor of the M.Sc. or Ph.D. thesis is located.  The page “Study programmes” in the section “Studying at Geotop” of our site provides a list of the graduate study programmes available.  Several of these programmes begin at the fall semester.  It is therefore important to verify the deadline dates for submitting an application for admission (usually in March).
  3. All of the students studying in a M.Sc. or Ph.D. programme at GEOTOP benefit from financial support, from research assistantships or from scholarships.  The page “Scholarships” in the section “Studying at Geotop” describes the scholarship programmes which may be available to Geotop graduate students. This list is not exhaustive.

It is important to note that the deadlines for application to many scholarship programmes (FQRNT and NSERC) are in the fall, several months before the first registration.

For further information, you may contact Sandrine Solignac.
